Tragic epilogue for Enea, the Northern Bald Ibis that brought this species back to Switzerland
Enea became famous last year when, together with the female Rupert, he built a nest on the windowsill of the Harley-Davidson car dealership in Rümlang, Canton Bern, and successfully raised two juvenile birds. The two parent birds come from the breeding colony established as part of the project in Überlingen on Lake Constance.

Our team member Corinna Esterer has been in Tuscany over the last few days to attach new transmitters to some birds in preparation for the spring migration, which now also transmit the positions in the G4 network in addition to the G2 network.

As repeatedly reported, a group of 32 juvenile Northern Bald Ibises set off northwards from Salzburg on October 28th, 2023. Part of the birds carried GPS devices, so their journey could be tracked.
Artificial conspecifics for the breeding birds of Überlingen
In 2022, we transferred breeding birds and their chicks of the Überlingen colony from the artificial breeding wall near Hödingen to a large niche on the Katharinenfelsen, a cliff on the shore of Lake Constance between Überlingen and Sipplingen, for the first time.
Setback for Species Conservation: Northern Bald Ibises in Friuli Venezia Giulia victims of poaching
On January 21st, the Northern Bald Ibis named Freckles, born in 2022 in the breeding colony of Rosegg, Austria, was found with a severely injured wing walking along the road in the Municipality of Buja, province of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

On December 2nd, we received news from Miguel Angel Quevedo Muñoz from our Spanish partner project Proyecto Eremita that a juvenile Northern Bald Ibis with rings from our project had been spotted south of Cádiz.
The incredible flight of Knubbel and her sad end
Knubbel is a juvenile female Northern Bald Ibis that hatched on June 3rd in Überlingen at Lake Constance and grew up there. During the autumn migration, the bird lost contact with its conspecifics in northern Italy. From then on, it showed the south-west orientation typical of unaccompanied juveniles.

The trend towards an increasingly later start of the autumn migration continues in 2023. Until November 24th, the majority of the Northern Bald Ibises from the three breeding colonies of Burghausen, Kuchl and Überlingen were still on the northern foothills of the Alps.
