Tragic epilogue for Enea, the Northern Bald Ibis that brought this species back to Switzerland

Enea became famous last year when, together with the female Rupert, he built a nest on the windowsill of the Harley-Davidson car dealership in Rümlang, Canton Bern, and successfully raised two juvenile birds. The two parent birds come from the breeding colony established as part of the project in Überlingen on Lake Constance.

On January 21st, the Northern Bald Ibis named Freckles, born in 2022 in the breeding colony of Rosegg, Austria, was found with a severely injured wing walking along the road in the Municipality of Buja, province of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The incredible flight of Knubbel and her sad end

Knubbel is a juvenile female Northern Bald Ibis that hatched on June 3rd in Überlingen at Lake Constance and grew up there. During the autumn migration, the bird lost contact with its conspecifics in northern Italy. From then on, it showed the south-west orientation typical of unaccompanied juveniles.
